Summer 2025

Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner Pediatric Urgent Care Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Southeastern Virginia

By Dr. Theresa Guins, MD

The PA/NP Pediatric Urgent Care Fellowship, which began in 2016, is a collaboration between Virginia Health Sciences (VHS), Children’s Specialty Group (CSG), and Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). CHKD is a free-standing Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in southeastern Virginia and has three Pediatric Urgent Care Centers located throughout Hampton Roads, in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Newport News. These busy clinics treat more than 104,000 patients a year.

The fellowship is designed for advanced practice providers who have newly graduated or those transitioning from another subspecialty. In July of 2025, the program will welcome the eighth cohort for this six-month learning experience. We can accept up to four fellows annually. Applications are accepted from January until April and acceptance is offered on a rolling admission basis. Most of the graduates of this program have gone on to have productive careers in pediatric urgent care, general pediatrics, or other related subspecialties.

The fellowship curriculum includes:

  1. Delivering evidence-based medical care at the three CHKD Urgent Care Centers with supportive and individualized mentorship.
  2. Weekly didactic in-person lectures and workshops with a CHKD Emergency Department Physician, totaling 50 hours of continuing medical education that are open to all CSG urgent care providers.
  3. Asynchronous learning assignments including articles and podcasts covering targeted content.
  4. Rotations in various CHKD subspecialties including the Emergency Department (a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center), Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Dermatology, Asthma/Allergy, and our Transport Team. Fellows rotate with a variety of preceptors during these rotations – NPs, PAs, MDs and DOs.
